I’ve only just started this one, but this line struck me immediately.
New Orleans was a little like England. People were comfortable with class distinctions.
These two sentences are very expressive. I’m not your #1 expert on New Orleans or anything, but I live just 5-6 hours away and have been a number of times; I love the city and Katrina has certainly affected me and all Houstonians. With my moderate level of New Orleans knowledge, I see what she’s driving at here. I like this book so far.

I’ve only been to New Orleans once and I loved it. I wish I could visit it more. Such a writer’s paradise.
It’s a lovely city, and so unique, and sadly, all the more so now.

Interesting observation. I’ve only been to New Orleans once, but it left an impression on me. I loved the food, but not so much the party atmosphere. Plus, it basically smelled like a dumpster (at least the parts we visited). Thanks for sharing. My teaser is here.
Hi Julie, yea, you have to work to get out of the French Quarter to improve that experience. I know exactly what you mean. The dumpster smell and party atmosphere are not the best points of NOLA, and they’re right at the forefront unfortunately. There’s a lot more there. If you ever make it back, try the Garden District and/or a guided tour of some sort maybe.
