book beginnings on Friday: The Fifth Witness by Michael Connelly

My current audiobook (for the daily commute) is the latest from Connelly, also the fourth of his books featuring Mickey Haller. Here we go!

Mrs. Pena looked across the seat at me and held her hands up in a beseeching manner. She spoke in a heavy accent, choosing English to make her final pitch directly to me.

“Please, you help me, Mr. Mickey?”

I’ve got to say this narrator may not be my cup of tea; but it’s early days yet and I’m certainly glad to be back in Connelly’s competent hands.

This sounds interesting. I hope you are enjoying the story and getting used to the narrator. I can’t do audiobooks myself. My attention wanders to easily when I need to listen.

Hope the narrator doesn’t ruin the book for you…it sounds like it will be really interesting. I rarely do audionovels, but the narrator is definitely important when I do.

Can you believe I have never read a Connelly? I’ve certainly heard good things, though.

My book beginning is part of my book review for the wonderful historical novel: Between Shades of Gray.

The Black Echo was his first, I believe. Really, all his books are excellent, although I have my favorites, and you could pick up anywhere; but to start at the beginning of the characters’ stories, you want The Black Echo.

Hmmm, I don’t know that this beginning would pull me in very quickly. But there is some promise to it – it does leave you with questions.
