Teaser Tuesdays: South Texas Tales by Patricia Cisneros Young

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current read
* Open to a random page
* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

I first learned about South Texas Tales: Stories My Father Told Me when I got a request for it here in the library. I’d not heard of it, but it sounded very interesting, and I was pleased to pick it up when we got it in (not least, because of that beautiful cover! Look at that!).

Your teaser today comes from page 65:

Jagou had not counted on the popular support of the communities, both in Brownsville and in Matamoros, rallying around the grief-stricken Hinojosa family. He watched nervously as regular customers became scarce and his daily sales margins dwindled to a trickle.

I am not sure that Jagou has done a good thing… or are the customers being unreasonable?

I look forward to reading these stories of a unique area right in my backyard.

    Here’s MY TT POST

  2. Thanks so much for posting this teaser. I’m a native Texan (displaced at the moment) and I know I’d enjoy this book.
My teaser is here: Sandy’s Teaser

  3. Wow! I don’t think I ever know which state or county a book I read is set in… I usually forget whether it’s US or Canada, Scotland or England, etc…

  4. Imagine my surprise when I found this site and my book was featured! I am in the doldrums because I am finishing my new book “Brownsville Sailor” and I hate to leave my characters.

Thank you for reading my book. I certainly hope that it gave you pleasure. I am passionate about keeping the Tejano culture and stories alive and am humbled whenever anyone is interested in my writing. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    All my best regards,

    Patricia Cisneros Young

    • So glad to have you, Ms. Young! I did enjoy your stories and I hope to see more; do you have a pub date for “Brownsville Sailor”? I have an interest in Tejano culture, too, and am glad you’re doing good work. Thank you!

  5. Since I teach full time at a high risk population high school here in Brownsville, Texas and also teach two Composition classes at the University of Texas
at Brownsville, I am challenged by the lack of time. Hopefully, and after my work is read by at least six people who are willing to comment (their comments
will be featured on the back cover (are you interested in participating, by the way?), I will submit to a publisher. Pleae let me know, okay?

    All my best regards,

    Patricia
