book beginnings on Friday: Killing Floor by Lee Child (audio)

Thanks to Katy at A Few More Pages for hosting this meme. To participate, share the first line or two of the book you are currently reading and, if you feel so moved, let us know what your first impressions were based on that first line.

I take a deep sigh and snuggle in when I begin a new Lee Child/Jack Reacher novel, because I know I’m in for a treat.

This one begins:

I was arrested in Eno’s diner. At twelve o’clock. I was eating eggs and drinkings coffee. A late breakfast, not lunch. I was wet and tired after a long walk in heavy rain. All the way from the highway to the edge of town.

Yep, that’s Reacher, all right – walking from a highway to the edge of a town, and eating eggs and drinking coffee in a diner. Getting arrested is not too far off the norm, either; although a former military cop, he does tend to have trouble with authority. Lives by his own rules, let’s say.

This one looks great, like all the rest! What are you reading?

  1. I have been very curious about this series and the character Jack Reacher. Thanks for sharing those great opening lines!

    Here’s MY FRIDAY MEMES POST

  2. I’ve read some of the Jack Reacher books and enjoyed them very much . My son (38) and I will both be reading this one when it arrives at the library. Arrested in a diner is quite an opening-even for Jack. I look forward to your thoughts on this book.
    My BB post is up.

  3. I really like the first sentence although I think the rest lets it down and loses some of the impact. Still, it’s one I’d be interested in reading and the cover has really grabbed me! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  4. I’ve heard such great things about the Jack Reacher series. The first one is long overdue at my library, so I’ve been hesitant to jump in. Do you have to read them in order?

  5. Oooooooo

    Great teaser!

    Here is my BBF 🙂

  6. Phaedosia, I posted on this concept recently, in fact. I don’t worry about reading series in order, including this one. This is, in fact, the first, and it’s maybe the 9th I’ve read. Doesn’t bother me. I actually enjoy watching the character develop out of sequence, but that’s me. Some people want to read in order. Your call. Every one of these books stands alone excellently.

  7. I love how you’ve described the character even more than the beginning. I’m going to have to look this series up.

Thanks for participating in Book Beginnings!
